Norbert O. Barelmann

Norbert Oswald Barelmann was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 and joined his loving wife, Joanne, in the fullness of God’s care and love. He was 93 years old. Norbert was born May 13, 1930, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, the youngest of five sons, to the late Frederick and Helen (nee Kreuter) Barelmann. He was baptized on June 1, 1930, and confirmed April 2, 1944 at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cedarburg. He married the love of his life, Joanne Moerschel, on October 29, 1955.

Norbert served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1955 and the Army Reserves for six years. He worked as an electrician, owned his own business, and was a genuine handyman. He also served with the Cedarburg Fire Department for many years. After a full day’s work, he could be found in his recliner, watching television or listening to the police scanner with a jar of peanuts or candy at his side. He loved mowing the lawn and giving tractor rides to his grandchildren. Though his health prevented those activities in recent years, Norbert could often be found sitting in his favorite spot on the front porch. Norbert was a lifelong member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a man of strong faith. His greatest joy in life, though, was his family. Norbert was a loving and proud father and grandfather, always interested in his family’s lives and ready with a joke and a laugh. He celebrated numerous happy family events, especially in the last year, and provided support and love during the difficult times. His strength and love for his family and God will be missed by all close to him.

Norbert was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 64 years, Joanne Barelmann. Together they raised six children: Ellen (John) Trummer, West Bend; Bob Barelmann (Linda Buyeske), Cedarburg; Tom (Jane) Barelmann, Cedarburg; Nancy Beck, Cedarburg; Wendy (Dave) Wollner, Grafton; and Jim (Kathy) Barelmann, Cedarburg. He was a proud grandpa to his 15 grandchildren: Tracy (Andy) Behrendt; Stephanie (Mike) Paulus; Lindsay Barelmann (Dave Hudack); Kelly (Dylan) Anagnoustopolous; Jeff (Katie) Barelmann; Dan (Emily) Barelmann; Megan (Eric) Curtis; Jared Beck; Jacob (Stephanie) Beck; Hannah (Mitch) Lundry; Adam (Kate) Wollner; Emily Wollner (Alex Salkowski); Jonathan Wollner (Rachel Cook); Kari (Jake) Wegner; and Joe Barelmann (Stephanie King). Norbert adored his eight great-grandchildren and always had a hug for each one: Benjamin and Christian Behrendt, Evelyn Paulus, Eloise and Lucille Barelmann, Kodie Anagnoustopolous, Emma Curtis, and Charlie Kay Lundry. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Doris Barelmann, Barbara Rathke, and Barb Moerschel; and many other family and friends. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, George Barelmann, Raymond (Bennet) Barelmann, Elmer (Anita) Barelmann, and Frederick Barelmann; brothers-in-law Derald Rathke and Glenn Moerschel; and daughter-in-law Cheryl Barelmann.

The family wishes to thank Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital—Ozaukee Campus and Horizon’s Lawlis Family Hospice for their compassionate care of Norbert during his short stay.
