Mary S. Canfield

Mary S. Canfield (nee Floyd) formally Sturgeon, of Saukville, passed away December 30, 2014, at the age of 96 years at Milan Estates, in Saukville, WI. Mary was born on September 24, 1918, in Little Rock, AR, the daughter of the late Robert Leo Floyd and the late Willoughby (nee Burnside) Floyd. Mary graduated from Lake High School in Chicago, IL, in 1936, and then received her secretarial certificate shortly thereafter. Mary was united in marriage to the late Edgar R. Sturgeon, on February 27, 1937, in Chicago, IL. Mary and Edgar were blessed with 1 child in Chicago, before moving to Wausau, WI, and having 3 more children. Mary was a homemaker, as well as a very talented seamstress, tackling coats, formal dresses, and other family clothing, as well as wedding dresses for some of the girls and some friends. She could upholster furniture and paint a room or change storm windows as needed, then knit and do needlework for beautiful gifts. She enjoyed both history and current events, as well as discussions about them or trying to educate her children about them. Mary was also an excellent golfer, enjoying the game and social activities involving golfing with friends. Mary and Edgar moved to Naples, FL, in 1983, after Ed’s retirement. Prior to Ed’s passing in 1985, they were both very adventurous and enjoyed learning about the different cultures and interacting with locals while they traveled abroad and lived briefly in Brazil and Egypt. Mary was united in marriage in Naples, Fl, in 1991, to the late Herbert C. Canfield, and shortly thereafter they moved to Tucson, AZ. Always outgoing, and friendly, she could entertain many with interesting stories of her travels. Mary continued golfing well into her 90’s, and when she gave up driving her car, she tooled around in the golf cart for games or social activities. After Herbs passing in February, 2014, Mary moved to Milan Estates Assisted Living in Saukville, WI, to be near her family. In spite of a few health setbacks, Mary managed to re-learn some skills, including knitting and crocheting. She happily made many items for the Milan staff as well as other residents. Mary enjoyed weekly outings and making new friends at the Chicks with Sticks group at the Port Washington Senior Center. Mary’s other hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, watching the Golf Channel on TV, and visiting with family. Mary is survived by her children, Barbara (Bill) Sullenger of Tuscan, AZ, Susan (John) Schlaak of Saukville, and Douglas (Bev) Sturgeon of West Bend. She is further survived by 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, former husbands, a daughter Nancy, 12 siblings, and a great-grandson. The family would like to thank the staff at Milan Estates, as well as Hospice Advantage for all of their loving care and compassion. At Mary’s request, there will be no service at this time. A memorial service will be planned for a future date.
