John P. Mittag

John P. Mittag of Slinger, Wisconsin, went to his heavenly home on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the age of 66 years old. John was born to Arthur and Gloria (nee Shipley) Mittag on November 21, 1958, in Milwaukee, WI.

John graduated from Grafton High School in 1977 and went on to study at MATC, completing their Dental Technician program. Later in life, after working at Pioneer Container for many years, he changed careers. He became a Journeyman Heat and Frost Insulator with Local 19 until his forced disability retirement in 2005 due to a diagnosis with Multiple Myeloma.

The greatest joy in John’s life was spending time with his sons Andrew and Zachary. They enjoyed taking cruises in their car, going out to eat, talking and reminiscing, and watching sporting events together. John always tuned into Wisconsin sports teams, watching all the Packers, Brewers, and Bucks games. John and his boys would take a trip to the Wisconsin Dells for a weekend every summer through the time the boys completed high school. These were cherished memories for them. Per eldest son Andrew, “He was a great Dad and always was there for us. He never let us forget how much he loved and supported us in our life decisions. We could call him or show up to his condo any time of day or night and he would be there for us.”

Despite the obstacles, challenges, and setbacks that John’s cancer diagnoses presented him, John always kept his faith in God and fought the battle head on with all he had. He never gave up hope. Unfortunately, after multiple stem cell transplants, surgeries, radiation treatments, chemotherapy courses, and hospitalizations over 20 long years, John lost his battle with cancer.

John is survived by his sons, Andrew (Ashley Moua) and Zachary (Jessica Ehnert) of Slinger; brother, Paul (Patti) of Random Lake; sisters, Debra and Carol Mittag of Grafton, and Joan Fischer of Plymouth. Loving uncle of Crystal (Bill) Mosher, Daniel and Derek (Carrie) Knepprath, Jason (Michelle), Joshua, Jeremy (Amanda), Jacob (Falynn) Mittag. Beloved grand uncle of Dylan Rowdon, Kaylee and Jackson Knepprath, Phoenix, Sawyer, Savannah, Macy, Winnie, Olive, and Jack Mittag; and great-grand uncle of Bentley Rowdon. Also survived by uncle David (Lois) Shipley and aunts Marlene Persik and Patt Shipley, as well as many other relatives (cousins) and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Gloria Mittag; brother, Carl Mittag of Dallas, Texas; brother-in-law, Lyman Fischer; and nephew. Elijah Fischer; aunts and uncles Robert and Joyce Blair, Grace Galloway, James Shipley, Donald and Diane Makowski, and Tom Persik.

Countless thanks and blessings to the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and support staff at Aurora and Froedtert clinics and hospitals for the kindness and care given to John over the past 20 years. You too helped give John strength and hope throughout his life’s journey, and he would be the most appreciative of your dedication to exceptional care. Additional thanks and blessings to Pastor Joshua Gyson for taking time to visit and share communion with John over the last two years.
