Helen A. Proffit
Born to eternal life on November 10, 2024 at the age of 94 at Anita’s Gardens, Grafton. A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton on Thursday, November 21, 2024. A visitation will take place prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00. Service will take place at 11:00 officiated by Pastor Gary Holmes of the United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay. A burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Cemetery, Grafton. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay or the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Wisconsin (www.mda.org) are appreciated.
Helen was born on January 17, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Dr. Milton Klumb and Helen Hawkins Klumb. She graduated from Washington High School (Milwaukee) in 1948. Helen married the love of her life, William Evert Proffit, in 1950, in Milwaukee. They were blessed with two children.
Later in life, Helen returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from UW-Milwaukee. Helen taught First Grade for 30 years at Donges Bay School in Mequon.
Helen and her family resided in Whitefish Bay prior to their move to Grafton. She enjoyed art and loved teaching. In addition to her family, her hobbies and passions included travel and camping. She enjoyed visiting Yellowstone National Park, Colorado, Texas, and Arizona. She especially enjoyed camping with family at Lac du Flambeau. Helen was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Whitefish Bay. Last, but not least, she was a huge Packers fan!
No matter what, Helen always exhibited a calm demeanor…she was always willing to help people. She will be remembered for her very infectious laugh. Helen touched many, many lives including her students, family, and friends. She will be so missed by family, friends, and community.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and children, Ann Elizabeth Swatek (nee Proffit), William Milton Proffit, and grandson William Peter Swatek. She is survived by son in law Peter Swatek (Karen); nephews and nieces, Donald J. O’Neill (Lynn), Robert M. O’Neill (Nancy), Barbara E. Gulbrandsen nee O’Neill (Bob), Robin C. Gettelman, Willa K. Burke nee Gettelman (Rocky), Chris Proffit (Erin), Frederick (Mike) Proffit (Jane), Marguerite (Maggie) Proffit, and Stephen Proffit; and great grand nephews and nieces, and cousins.
