Gene Paul Feld

Gene Paul Feld, 86, of Germantown – formerly of Grafton – passed away peacefully on October 30. The Lord has taken him home.

Gene was born in Sheboygan on June 18, 1937, the fourth of Louis and Leona (nee Voigt) Feld’s five children. Louis moved his family from rural Kiel to the Milwaukee area for work, where Gene attended North Division High School before proudly serving in the U.S. Army. Following the service, he met his wife of 60 years, Margaret Satorius. They married on May 18, 1963, and had three children – William (Lisa), Sandi (Bryan Cheesebro) Wimbish and John (Jaimie).

Driving trucks was Gene’s lifelong passion. He started his career as a company driver before becoming an owner operator and then moving to the business side as a dispatcher. In 1986, he and Marge put everything on the line to start D&G Transportation, which they built from a basement office to a thriving logistics company with more than 80 employees and more than 60 owner operators.

Known around D&G as “Big Iron,” Gene was respected for his integrity, work ethic and sense of humor. He “retired” in 2001 and purchased a custom Peterbilt day cab, which he drove daily throughout Wisconsin to pick up cheese and other products at his favorite locations. He left the road permanently in 2010, visiting the office daily until 2022 to observe operations.

Gene was very proud of his German heritage and was conversant in its language from an early age. He and Marge traveled often to Germany, tracing his roots along the Rhine River and spending weeks in the Bavarian Alps. They were decorated members of the Rheinischer Verein Mardi Gras Society of Milwaukee for many years, reigning as the club’s Prinz and Prinzessen from 1996-1997. Gene also served on the Germanfest Board of Directors and was a friend of the Freistadt Alte Kameraden Band.

Gene is survived by his wife and children; grandchildren Maggie (Dustin) Habermann, Lauren (Carl) Wolf, SSgt Elisabeth (Robert) Edwards, Gianna Feld, Tate and Greta Feld; great grandchildren Mason and Kenah Habermann. Also survived by nieces, nephews and in-laws. Predeceased by his parents; sisters Jeanette Ragner, Darlene Feld and Karen Neumann; brother James Feld; dear in-laws and friends.

Gene’s foundation was his Christian faith. He and Marge raised their family in this same faith, instilling ethics and high morals for success in life. We are blessed beyond words and accept the loss of our father to the arms of our Lord.

The family appreciates the staff of Frontida Germantown and Preceptor Hospice for their care – and Pastors Raasch and Reichmann for their visits – in Gene’s final days.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at 6 p.m. at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, W67N622 Evergreen Blvd., Cedarburg. A private family burial with military honors will take place at Christ Church Cemetery, Dhiensville. A visitation will take place at the church on Sunday from 3-5:45 p.m. There will be a Celebration of Life gathering in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations to First Immanuel Lutheran Church are appreciated.
