A memorial service will be held, Friday, May 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Community United Methodist Church, Cedarburg, for Evelyn F. (Berg) Klug, who died on May 5, 2013 at the age of 91. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held in the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Community United Methodist Church are appreciated. Evelyn Klug was born in Eau Claire, WI, on June 13, 1921 to William and Inga (Haug) Berg. She grew up in Bloomer, WI, and graduated as valedictorian of Bloomer High School in 1939. In 1943, she received her B.S. in Home Economics from Stout Institute in Menomonie (now UW-Stout). In 1944, after jobs in Chicago and Park Falls, WI, Evie went to work at the Wisconsin Gas Company in Milwaukee. There she met her future husband, Robert A. “Bob” Klug. They married in 1946, a joyful union that lasted 65 years until Bob’s death in 2011. In 1956, Evie began teaching Home Economics to adult students at the Port Washington Vocational School. She greatly expanded programs there and at other campuses of what became the Milwaukee Area Technical College system. At her retirement in 1983, Evie was supervisor of Home Economics and Family Education at MATC’s Mequon campus. In 1984 Evie was elected to the Ozaukee County Board of Supervisors, one of the first women to serve in that office. Among her duties during her two terms, Evie served on the County Committee overseeing Lasata Care Center, where she was to reside for the final 2 ½ years of her life. A Cedarburg resident since 1954, Evie was an active volunteer in the community and at the United Methodist Church. She was a member of many organizations, including the Cedarburg Cultural Center, the League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood, Friends of Cedarburg Library, Family Sharing and Riveredge. In 2003, Evie and Bob Klug were named Ozaukee County Volunteers of the Year for their service to the community. Evie was a creative home cook and expert seamstress. She quilted for many personal and church projects and was a founding member of the Wisconsin Quilt Museum in Cedarburg. Evelyn Klug is survived by sons William (Meredith) Klug of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Richard (Kate Stearns) Klug of Natick, MA, and grandsons Nate Klug of New Haven, CT and Sam Klug of Natick, MA. Heartfelt thanks go to Elaine and Tom Halladay for their care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Community United Methodist Church are appreciated.
