Eugene L. Nelson Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 10:00am at St. Francis Borgia South Catholic Church (N44W6055 Hamilton Rd., Cedarburg) for Eugene L. Nelson of Cedarburg who was born to Eternal Life on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the age of 91 years at Lasata Care Center. Fr. Walter Vogel will officiate the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Francis Borgia Cemetery in Mequon with full Military Honors. Visitation will be held at the Mueller Funeral Home in Cedarburg, W63N527 Hanover Avenue, on Friday June 29th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Memorials to the Star and Stripes Flight Program in Port Washington, WI are appreciated. Eugene was born in Door County, Wisconsin on June 7, 1921, the son of the late Maurice and Alice (nee Livernash) Nelson. He was a 1939 graduate from Cedarburg High School where he played on the basketball team as a forward when the team went to the state championship. He married Eunice on April 21, 1944 in Selman Field (Military Base), Louisana. They were blessed with 4 children. Eugene was deployed to England in 1944 where he flew 30 combat missions over Europe during WWII in the Army Air Corp. Eugene was awarded the Purple Heart. He was an Officer and then became a Major in the Air Force Reserve, 58 years later he was finally awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross – DFC. Eugene was a long-standing Alderman for the city of Cedarburg. There were many things Eugene loved like wood carving and being a member of the EAA. Eugene was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he was on the Parish Council and the School Board. He was a mechanical engineer at Mercury Marine and an assistant director of engineering at Tecumseh where he retired after 30 years. Eugene was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol and retired from being a vice commander for the state of Wisconsin. Eugene is survived by his children; Gregory (Karen), Margaret “Peg” Nelson, Jeffrey (Barbara) and Michele (Donald) Haffner, grandchildren; Melissa (Chuck) Tate, Kevin (Nicole) Nelson, Brenda (Nathan) Schleifer, Todd (Mary) Nelson, Timothy (Tina) Nelson, Jacob Nelson and Daniel Haffner, 12 great-grandchildren, siblings; Maurice, Joan Huberty and James (Becky) Nelson, loving companion Patricia Pagliaro, other relatives and friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice in 1994. Memorials to Stars and Stripes Flight Program in Port Washington, WI
