Erwin A. Schmidt

Erwin A. Schmidt,

Of Grafton, peacefully passed away on June 22, 2024, at the age of 97. He was born on May 25, 1927, in Grafton to his late parents, Kurt Schmidt and Elsie (nee Krause). He was united in marriage to his late wife, Betty (nee Graese). Together, their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Debra.

Erwin enlisted himself into the United States Army where he was stationed in Japan in WWII. After his military service in 1947, he was a private pilot for Brown Deer Airport and in 1997, he was involved with the Grafton Legion Post 355. Because of his work ethic, he worked at Ataco Steel for 30 years before retiring in 1992. During his time at Ataco Steel, he was also the owner and operator for Schmidt Block Company where he made cement blocks. Aside from Erwin’s career, he was a lifetime member of his beloved church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grafton. He was very active with the church, he was involved with the male choir for 51 years, counted money for 59 years, and ushered for 30 years. With Erwin’s knowledge of being a machinist and tool and die extraordinaire, he would always lend a helping hand to friends, family, or acquaintances, if they needed assistance replacing and repairing equipment parts. In his free time, he would participate in the Antique Power Club where he showed antique tractors, farming equipment, and old engines. He had many hobbies, including cutting his grass and getting lost in history, where he could spend hours talking about. But his one true hobby was spending time with his family.

He is survived by his one daughter, Debra (Michael) Ladwig and his grandson, Eric (Elizabeth) Zimmermann. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty and his Lhasa Apso best friend, Muffin. Along with his five siblings, Raymond, Harold, Marvin, Kurt, and Doris.
