Al was born on August 8, 1929, in Combined Locks, Wisconsin, the son of the late Cornelius Smaxwill and the late Lena (nee Feller) Smaxwill. He attended and graduated from Messmer High School, in Milwaukee. Shortly after his graduation, Al served his country in the United States Army from March of 1951, until he was honorably discharged in March of 1953. Al worked as a truck driver for Heider & Bott Co. in Milwaukee, and after many years of hard work and dedication, Al was given the opportunity to become the sole owner and operator of the company. Al diligently worked in the plumbing wholesale business until he retired in 2006. Al was a true outdoorsman who loved spending time at their family lake home in both Bear Lake as well as Door County. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, logging, and selling firewood to the tourists who came to the Door County area.
