William Bowen Sarles Jr., 86, Grafton, Wisconsin passed away on July 7, 2015 after a valiant struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Marjorie; his children, Susan, Katherine and William B. (Amy) Sarles III; eight grandchildren; Leah, Joshua and Jessica Bonaparte; Molly, Megan and Emily Sarles and William B. and Matthew O’Connell; and his brother, Frank Sarles. Bill was born in Manhattan, Kansas in 1928. He attended Wisconsin High School in Madison, Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Madison after serving four years with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Sea Bee division stationed in Alaska and Guam. A true athlete, he excelled in any sport he played and was recruited by the University of Wisconsin’s football coach to play for U.W. Madison. Later on he took up golf and then taught himself how to play tennis. Bill started the Brown Deer Tennis Club in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, served as its President and also ran a program assisting high school tennis players. He also enjoyed swimming, sailing and a passion for fishing, including catching coho salmon on Lake Michigan out of a canoe. Bill’s other interests ranged from astronomy to geography to music, from jazz to classical. When he could no longer participate in sports he turned to flying a computerized flight simulator and landed in all of the world’s major airports. Bill will be truly missed and was much beloved for his marvelous wit, innate intelligence, his ability to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and his unconditional love for his family. He was simply the best. Per Bill’s request there will not be a funeral. A private memorial service will be held for his immediate family.
