Verona P. Dobberfuhl

Verona Dobberfuhl (nee Boehlke) was born in Germantown, Wisconsin on January 26, 1923, to Arnold and Esther Boehlke (nee Ernst). She was baptized here at Trinity by the Rev. H. C. Wehrs. She was confirmed here also by Pastor Wehrs. On August 7, 1943, Verona Boehlke married Elmer Dobberfuhl, a fellow member of Trinity. Pastor Wehrs performed that ceremony in German. By this time her husband, Elmer, was teacher and principal of a Christian Day School in Detroit, Michigan, a school which he had started, so Verona moved to Detroit. In Detroit Verona was very active in their congregation teaching Sunday School, helping pupils with special needs in the Christian Day School, serving at various times as a committee member, a board member, or as an officer of a guild or other congregational group. She also gave many hours of volunteer service to the church and school offices. In 1949 her husband Elmer accepted a call as professor of Education at Concordia Teachers’ College, Seward, Nebraska. At Concordia Verona was active in faculty organizations and with faculty wives’ activities. While at Seward, the family’s third and youngest son Kent was born brain injured. The serious complications from that brain injury made doctors in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, recommend Kent’s care to Dr. Walter Blount in Milwaukee. This move, then, brought Verona and family back to Trinity Freistadt where they have maintained membership ever since.Since 1954 Verona has been very active in organizations and programs which help developmentally disabled persons. Over the years she has served variously as a group member, committee member, board member, and officer including chairperson at times of at least six organizations some of which were on the federal level, some on the state level, some on the Washington County level, and some on the Germantown community level. Verona was instrumental in establishing the Germantown Group Home on Main Street which opened in 1974.For thirty one years Verona had driven developmentally disabled persons, many in wheelchairs, to over ten different schools for Riteway Bus Service of Richfield, Wisconsin. Verona Dobberfuhl died on January 10, 2015 to enter the Church Triumphant. Verona was preceded in death by her husband Elmer in 1997. She is survived by her son’s; Allan of Germantown, Darryl (Gail) of Reston VA, & Kent of West Bend, grandchildren; Jennifer (Jimmy) Flynn of Arlington, VA, Sarah (Bernardo) Gutierrez of Wauwatosa, & Amy (Eric) Huber of Menomonee Falls, great grandchildren; Alejandro, Johnnie, June & Dean; brothers Norman Boehlke of Germantown, & Donald (Eshter) Boehlke of Germantown.
