Raymond L Tiegs
Raymond L. Tiegs of Grafton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on September 26th at the age of 94. Raymond was born January 31, 1929, to Raymond A Tiegs and Marie Tiegs (nee Coates).
Raymond was united in marriage with Doris Tiegs (nee Hansen) on April 19, 1953. Together their marriage was blessed with 6 children. Lynn Tiegs, the late Paul Tiegs, Jill (Bill) Bertram, Al (Amy) Tiegs, John (Kerry) Tiegs, and Gary (Debbie) Tiegs. Raymond is further survived by his 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, as well as countless other family and friends.
Raymond attended Grafton High School. He was in the US Navy, and transferred to the US Marine Corp in 1948. Raymond valiantly served during the Korean War, and was engaged at the Battle of Chosin. He was also a firefighter for the USMC in San Diego. He was honorably discharged from the Corp in 1952. After leaving the service, Raymond was employed by Tecumseh Products until his retirement in 1993.
In addition, Raymond was active in his community. He was a volunteer firefighter, and later an EMT for the Grafton Fire Department for 65+ years. He also umpired softball for many years for the Grafton Recreation Department throughout the 1950’s -1970’s. He was instrumental in moving the old trestle bridge in Grafton to Lime Kiln Park. He assisted with the restoration and museum at the Grafton Fire Department, and donated memorabilia.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his son Paul, and daughter in law Krista Weyker Tiegs.
There will be a funeral service held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday September 29th. Visitation is from Noon- 1:45, with a service at 2:00. He will then be laid to rest in a private ceremony at St. Joseph’s Cemetery following the service. There will be an additional celebration of life at the Grafton Legion directly after the service. The family would like to thank the staff at Anita’s Garden’s in Grafton for their compassionate care, and endless coffee.
