Merton Eugene Asp passed away June 11th, 2012 at Lasata Care Center, Cedarburg, WI at the age of 84. He was born December 15th, 1927 in Iron Mountain, MI. He was the son of Walter E and Grace Asp (nee Peterson). Visitation, Saturday, June 16th 9:00 am – 10:45 am with Service at 11am at Mueller Funeral Home Cedarburg W63 N527 Hanover Ave, WI. Burial in Foster City, MI. Shortly after attending High School in the U. P., of Felch, MI, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy August 1945. His service took him to Kobe, Japan and Subic Bay, Luzon Philippines. He has four medals and was honorably discharged November, 1948 as an Engineman, Third, EN3. He was proud to be a veteran that served his country. He later married Marjorie Grosser, June 7th, 1952 and they had three sons, David, Rick and Ron. He was a Bricklayer/Mason and retired in 1982. He enjoyed deer hunting and made several trips back to the U.P. to visit family. He was known as “Mert in the Morning” at L & G Express Bar and “Pop’s” to those who were close to him. He was witty with a dry sense of humor and understood the importance of friendships. He was able to continue serving as bartender until just a few years ago. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Peter Wollner American Legion Post #288 in Cedarburg, WI and a Life Member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers #8. He loved to read and share books with family and friends. Merton is survived by his sister Dorothy Koehn of Iron Mountain, MI and Robert Asp of Sobieski, WI. Mert’s children David (Cathy) Abrahamson of Silver Spring, MD, Rick (Susan) Asp of Cedarburg, Ron Asp of Suring, WI, grand children Chris, Liz and Jon Abrahamson along with other family and friends. Merton was preceded in death by his parents Walter E and Grace Asp along with other family and friends. Please join us as we celebrate his life and honor his contributions to the Cedarburg community. Pop’s will be deeply missed as he was a friend to many. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Lasata Care Center in Cedarburg for their care and compassion as well as, Heartland Hospice.
