Joseph E. Sommers went to the Lord’s loving arms on February 27th, 2016, at the age of 90 years. Joseph was born November 3, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to his parents Joseph and Matilda Sommers. He was baptized, confirmed and married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended 20th St Grammar school, North Division High School, U.W.M., and The Industrial College of the Armed Forces, in Washington DC. His love of country lead him to the Armed forces, in February of 1944, and was assigned to training camp at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, in Pennsylvania. After training in the states, he trained in England, and then went to combat in France, Germany and Central Europe, under General Patton. He received the Purple Heart, the Medal of Metz, and after 70 years, The French Medal of Honor, for liberating the French in WWII, along with numerous awards throughout his military career of 41 years. He retired as a Colonel from the United States Army. He loved his church and his family and also enjoyed biking, swimming, hiking and staying active. Joseph was preceded in death by his mother and father, his two sisters, Loretta and Mildred, and their husbands, Paul and Burt, and his son-in-law Robert. He is survived by his wife Patricia of 62 years, and his children, Nancy (Robert) Fedie, Vicki Sommers, Sharon (the late Robert) Brisky, Barbara (Joseph) Gill and Michael (Angie) Sommers. Also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Adrienne (David) Henderson, Bradley (Jenny) Fedie, Brittany (Zach) Fedie/Kemp, Maxwell Brisky, Samantha (Matt) Biegalow, Elizabeth Fedie, Joseph Gill Jr, Emily Westman, Rebecca and Kyle Karttunen, and Jack Sommers. He is further survived by his great grandchildren, Olivia, Moriah and Calvin Henderson, and Lilly and baby Biegalow, and nephews Richard (Mitzi) Thurow, and Donald (Kathy) Thurow, and other friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church Friestadt for their mission work. The visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, from 11:30AM until 1:30PM at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church (10729 W. Freistadt Rd.), Mequon, followed by a memorial service at 1:30PM. There will be a private committal held at a later date.
