Helmut 'Harry' Janowitsch

Helmut “Harry” Janowitsch, of Grafton, entered into eternal life on Monday, September 9, 2013, at the age of 60 years. Harry was born on January 19, 1953, in Gmunden, Austria, the son of the late Josef Janowitsch and the late Maria Janowitsch (nee Hornung). Harry moved to the United States at a young age, and grew up in the Glendale/Fox Point area. Harry spent much of his childhood on the soccer field, playing for many years at the Schwabenhof and then for the major division with the Bavarian Soccer Club. Harry graduated from Nicolet High School in 1971, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to play football. Harry then became a journeyman in gear cutting and worked in the manufacturing industry throughout his career. He was most recently employed at E.R. Wagner in Milwaukee as a manager of manufacturing. On June 18, 1983, Harry was united in marriage to Mary Lou Stankowski, and they recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Although Harry always claimed that this date also signified the beginning of his hair loss, Harry loved his wife with all of his heart. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Melissa and Laura. Harry was the proudest dad one could find, and followed his girls around the country to soccer fields near and far. He was the ultimate “soccer dad” making sure the coolers were packed for every game, the favorite treats were purchased, and the sidelines were worn down from his constant pacing during the games. Harry was fortunate to see his two little girls play in college and graduate with their advanced degrees. He made sure to let them know that he was proud and had all the confidence in the world in them. Harry was known to all as the sharp, witty “tough guy” with the hard exterior, but with a teddy bear heart. He became the adopted dad of many of Melissa’s and Laura’s friends, always ready to give that strong embrace. Harry made sure that each guest in his home was comfortable, well-fed and relaxed. Harry is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Janowitsch, of Grafton, his children, Melissa Janowitsch, of Madison, and Laura Janowitsch, of Chicago. He is further survived by his sister Hilde Lowther (Jerry), of West Bend, brothers-in law, sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many loving and supportive friends. Although Harry will be dearly missed by the many blessed to be a part of his life, he is now resting peacefully after a long-endured struggle with cancer. His strength was admired by all, and will continue on in his loved ones’ hearts. A visitation will take place on Friday, September 13, 2013, from 2:00-4:45pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (1619 Washington St.) in Grafton, followed by a mass at 5:00pm. The family is asking for attendees to dress in autumn colors, as that was Harry's favorite time of the year. Interment will take place during sunset at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Grafton following the mass. Memorials of choice are appreciated.
