Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 7:00pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 701 W. Washington Street in Grafton for Gertrude Anna Haas who died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Ellen’s Home in Port Washington at the age of 83 years. Interment will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday at church from 4:00pm until 6:45pm. Memorials appreciated to St. Paul Lutheran School Good Samaritan Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association. Gertrude was born on a farm near Luxemburg in Kewaunee County on January 27, 1930, the 3rd child of Reinhold and Ella Scharping. Gertrude was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Luxemberg, Wisconsin. She graduated from Luxemburg High School and went on to Door Kewaunee County Teacher’s College to receive her teaching certificate. Gertrude taught 3 years in a one-room school (grades 1-8) in Kewaunee County. After 3 years of trying to teach evolution in the science class of that public school, she decided to switch to teaching in a Lutheran School. After finishing several more teaching courses she was hired to teach 1st grade at St. Paul Lutheran School in Grafton. She met and married Dennis L. Haas, Sr. on December 29, 1956 and they were blessed with 3 children. Gertrude taught at St. Paul’s full time for about 16 years. Gertrude also loved volunteering. Gertrude is survived by her children; Sandra (Ron) Slaughter, Dennis L. Jr. (Terri) and Debra Haas, grandchildren; Matthew and Benjamin Haas, sisters; Lorraine Strege and Sylvia Mueller and sister-in-law; Elaine Scharping, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Dennis and brother; Eric Scharping. Memorials to St. Paul Lutheran School Good Samaritan Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association appreciated.
