He believed so strongly in serving his country that he asked his mother when he was 17 if she would sign for him to join the military. She refused because his brother was already in. Gerry became a member of the Cedarburg Fire Department right after high school. He was eventually drafted into the Army in 1951, serving his time in Germany during the Korean War until his discharge in 1953. Gerry married Marie Sievert on April 23, 1955, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Cedarburg. The couple lived in downtown Milwaukee for their first two years of marriage, eventually buying a house and moving to Cedarburg. Besides the fire department, which he rejoined in 1958, Gerry also worked for American Can as a truck driver until his retirement after 36 years. In retirement, he worked for Friendship Village in maintenance, at Kohls warehouse and at Ozaukee Bank. Gerry and Marie tented with their children all over the US. The couple also travelled a lot with Ozaukee Bank to places such as Australia, New Zealand, Figi, Scandinavia, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Nova Scotia and Hawaii. Gerry enjoyed tinkering in his garage with anything, keeping his hands busy and listening to polka music while doing it. He also liked watching the squirrels at his feeders, bird watching and viewing backyard wildlife. Gerry also enjoyed being in parades. Gerry was a lifelong member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, a 50+ year member of the Cedarburg Fire Department and a 57 year member of the Peter Wollner American Legion Post #288.
