He grew up in various places as his family moved a lot (Dedham, MA, Dallas, TX, Pleasantville, NY and Needham, MA). He graduated from Needham High School in 1948, and in 1952 he received his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He received his commission as a second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the service in 1954 he was employed as a draftsman for Metcalf & Eddy engineers in Boston. He then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he received his MS in Sanitary Engineering in 1956. In February 1957 Dave married Rigmor Wienke, who had emigrated from Denmark. That marriage was blessed with two sons, Steven amd Robert. Starting in 1960 Dave was employed by Camp, Dresser & McKee as a project engineer and later project director on assignments throughout the United States. He eventually rose to the positions of Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. In 1964 his work took him and his young family to live in Bogota, Colombia, South America for two years. In Bogota Dave was the first person to work for CDM as a full-time overseas employee. He served on the church council of the Union Church of Bogota as chair of the Outreach Committee. In 1972, upon the death of Rigmor from cancer in January, Dave remarried, this time to Joan Betty Weber, a Dedham school teacher who immediately became the mother of his two teenagers. They lived in Needham for five years until moving to Mequon, Wisconsin in February 1977. Dave set up the CDM north central environmental engineering office in Milwaukee. In 1982 he retired from the firm and became an independent consulting engineer. In this capacity he took on water and wastewater projects throughout the world (Australia, South Asia, the Middle East, Central Europe, Africa, Central and South America) for consulting firms and international agencies. The highlight of his career was a series of working trips to Israel and the West Bank in 2003 and 2004. His last assignment took him to Mozambique in 2007. Since 1977 Dave was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Grafton where he served on the Church Council and various committees. He was a lector, usher and choir member for many years. Starting in 2000 Dave was a volunteer at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital – Ozaukee in Mequon, and he continued to serve there until his health waned. In his retirement Dave was an avid reader, gardener and pheasant hunter with his beloved labs, Bo and Sheena. He had deep interest in astronomy, environment, climate, history, Sudoku and anything to test his mind. Dave is survived by his wife, Joan (nee Weber) of 46 years, sons, Steven (Moni) and Robert (Karen), grandchildren: Robin, Greg (Jenny), Ashley and Andrea. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Dais and two nieces, Julia Dais-Smith and Jackie Dais-Visca who all reside in Canada.
